Guest blog posting was once an extremely popular SEO tactic, so popular that Google released numerous videos discussing how to do it without spamming. Editorial links from blog posts were and still are extremely powerful votes that help websites rank in Google but some people abused the power of blog links. Once people realised the power of blog links they started to use low quality, spun content, they stuffed this rubbish content with keywords and irrelevant anchor text links.
Blog Networks
The low quality content was often published on blog networks, what is a blog network? Wikipedia says, “A blog network is a group of blogs that are connected to each other in a network. A blog network can either be a group of loosely connected blogs, or a group of blogs that are owned by the same company. The purpose of such a network is usually to promote the other blogs in the same network and therefore increase the advertising revenue generated from online advertising on the blogs.”
Does Low Quality Guest Posting Still Work?
I don’t know, some search results would suggest it still does but updates like penguin and panda have definitely caught a lot of sites. The penalties for naughty SEO tactics are just too high these days, many once profitable sites have been completely ruined, never to be seen again.
In this post Matt Cutts discusses the decay and fall of guest blogging but he is not talking about real guest blogging, he is talking about spammy guest blogging. See the bottom of his post, “I just want to highlight that a bunch of low-quality or spam sites have latched on to “guest blogging” as their link-building strategy, and we see a lot more spammy attempts to do guest blogging. Because of that, I’d recommend skepticism (or at least caution) when someone reaches out and offers you a guest blog article.”
Does Real Guest Blog Posting Still Work Or Is It Spam?
I haven’t done any on this site recently, I am going to be starting again really soon. I have done some guest posting for a few clients, I have written useful, well researched informative content, the kind that Google recommends, I have published the posts on real blogs with real readers and my clients gave me good feedback on the results they received, see this press release for more info.
